About this home

Middle Street is a four-bedroom, dog-friendly holiday house in Southampton that sleeps nine, with a parking permit included, an enclosed back garden and a big open-plan kitchen, dining and living room. It's on a quiet residential street north of the city centre, about 11 minutes' walk from the cafés and bars of Bedford Place and 25 from Southampton Central and WestQuay, so it's an easy base for a family get-together, a work team, a university visit or a few nights before a cruise. Book it direct with us here.

Inside the house

The ground floor is one generous, sociable space: the kitchen flows into the dining area and the lounge, so the cook is never left out and there's room for everyone at the table. Guests on a work trip told us it was a clean, modern house to come back to in the evenings, to make dinner and chat together, and families say there's plenty of room. Settle on the sofa with something on the smart TV, spread a board game across the dining table, or catch up on emails with the fast Wi-Fi.

Bedrooms

Bedroom 1: a queen-size bed.

Bedroom 2: two single beds.

Bedroom 3: a single bed.

Bedroom 4: a double bed.

Living room: a sofa bed for two more.

One of the bedrooms is on the ground floor, by the step-free front door. Beds are made up with good-quality linen before you arrive, and guests regularly mention how comfortable they are and how plentiful and soft the towels are. There are extra pillows and blankets too.

The bathroom

There's one bathroom, upstairs, with a bath and a hot shower over it, fresh towels and starter toiletries. With nine people in the house, a little planning in the mornings goes a long way, and there's no separate downstairs toilet.

Kitchen

The kitchen is properly kitted out, with an oven and hob, a microwave, a fridge, a dishwasher, a toaster and a kettle, with tea, milk and sugar to start you off. One guest summed it up as a lovely kitchen with lots of utensils, bowls and useful stuff, so cooking for a big group is easy, and the dishwasher deals with the aftermath.

Travelling with children

Middle Street is set up for families. There's a cot and a high chair, children's tableware, books and toys, and socket covers, so you can travel lighter. The twin room works well as a children's room, and the enclosed garden gives little ones somewhere to run around.

The garden

Out the back is a fully enclosed garden with outdoor seating, handy for letting the dog out, a coffee in the morning sun or a drink on a warm evening. It's a plain, practical space rather than a landscaped one, but guests still enjoy sitting out there after a day in the city.

Working and longer stays

For a work team, four bedrooms mean five separate beds, so most of the group get a bed of their own. There's fast Wi-Fi and a place to work, a washing machine and tumble dryer, and an iron. Stays of a week or more are priced lower per night, and you can book up to 89 nights online. For longer stays or company bookings, email us before you book and we'll see what we can do for you.

Where you are in Southampton

Middle Street is a quiet residential street on the north side of the city centre, and guests often say how peaceful it is at night. Bedford Place, with its independent cafés, bars and restaurants, is about 11 minutes' walk. The Mayflower Theatre and Portswood's shops and restaurants are each about 20 minutes on foot, and St Mary's Stadium about 21. Southampton Common, Southampton Central station and WestQuay shopping centre are all about 25 minutes' walk, and the medieval Bargate about 26. There are buses nearby into town, and the University of Southampton's Highfield campus is about 34 minutes' walk or a short bus ride.

By car, Southampton General Hospital is about 10 minutes away, and the New Forest at Lyndhurst about 23. The city's museums and waterfront, including Tudor House, the SeaCity Museum and Mayflower Park, are a short drive or bus ride.

Cruises and ferries

If you're sailing from Southampton, the Ocean Cruise Terminal is about 6 minutes' drive, the Mayflower Cruise Terminal about 7 and the City Cruise Terminal about 35 minutes' walk. Town Quay, for the Red Funnel ferries to the Isle of Wight, is about 6 minutes by car.

Getting here and parking

Southampton Central station, about 25 minutes' walk, has direct trains to London Waterloo, and Southampton Airport Parkway is about 8 minutes' drive. Parking is on the street in a residents' permit zone, and we lend you the house's permit for one car for your stay; you'll find it in the house when you arrive, and we just ask you to leave it there when you go. Guests tell us there's usually a space nearby. If you're bringing a second car, we sometimes have a few 24-hour visitor cards spare, but we can't promise them, so ask us before you arrive. There's pay parking nearby too.

Arriving

You have the whole house and garden to yourselves. Check-in is self check-in from 4 pm to 9 pm, with the key in a lockbox at the house; we send the code before you arrive. Check-out is by 10 am. Our local team is on hand by message every day from 8 am to 8 pm, and there's an emergency number for anything urgent.

Worth knowing

There's one bathroom for up to nine people, and it's upstairs. The upstairs bedrooms can get warm on hot summer nights, and there's no air conditioning, so open windows help in a heatwave. The house's single parking permit is a council permit, so it has to stay with the house.
