The façade is truly impressive: a grand portico of Corinthian columns supports a pediment sculpture depicting Britannia receiving the trades of the world, and above it a statue of Neptune rides a chariot pulled by giant seahorses, symbolizing Portsmouth’s maritime heritage. Inside, a lofty clocktower houses the famous Pompey Chimes – five massive bells (the largest named “Victoria”) which chime the Westminster Quarters and ring on the hour. These bells, installed in 1889, inspired Portsmouth F.C.’s football chant and were lovingly restored in time for Queen Elizabeth II’s visit in 2009. The Guildhall suffered devastating bombing in January 1941, leaving only a burned-out shell, but the exterior walls and tower were salvaged. In the 1950s, architect Ernest Berry Webber rebuilt the Guildhall, simplifying some of the ornate details but creating modern interiors, and it was triumphantly reopened by the Queen in 1959. Today, Portsmouth Guildhall thrives as a premier concert and events venue – hosting everything from rock legends and classical concerts to comedy shows, weddings and conferences. (The Beatles played here in 1963, and Pink Floyd debuted Dark Side of the Moon here live in 1972!) Last but certainly not least, take a short trip just outside Portsmouth to Portchester Castle, where 1,700 years of history await inside one set of walls. Incredibly, Portchester Castle today is the best-preserved Roman fort north of the Alps – it still has virtually its entire 3rd-century defensive circuit intact, including the towering stone curtain walls and 16 of the original 20 D-shaped bastion towers (a survival almost unparalleled in northern Europe). Walking through the gate is like stepping back in time: you can trace the thick Roman masonry around all four sides of the huge enclosure. After the Romans, the site remained important – evidence shows it served as a Saxon stronghold (or burh) in the 9th–10th centuries to help fend off Viking raids. By the medieval period, the Normans recognized Portchester’s strategic value and built a castle within the Roman walls. In the northwest corner rises a formidable Norman keep (Great Tower) from the 12th century, later expanded by King Richard II in the 1390s into a royal palace complete with luxurious apartments. Several English kings used Portchester Castle as a departure point for expeditions to France – and as a comfortable lodging (it’s said Richard II’s suites here are among the most complete medieval royal apartments surviving in England). In the 18th and early 19th centuries, the old castle found a new purpose as a large prisoner-of-war depot, housing thousands of POWs during the Napoleonic Wars (you can still see graffiti and carvings left by French prisoners). Today, the open grounds inside the fort include a quaint 12th-century church and pleasing picnic spots with views over Portsmouth Harbour. Climb the Great Tower for panoramic vistas, or simply wander the echoing ruins and mighty walls. Portchester Castle truly brings history to life – Roman engineering, medieval majesty, and wartime drama all in one extraordinary place.
